Writing Memoir without a Net
September 21, 2024
Whether you are writing a memoir that you’re sure will be a bestseller or you’re only thinking about writing a story of some kind based on your life to give to those love; whether you’re simply curious about what it takes to write about yourself, or you are sure everyone wants to hear your story, this meeting will inspire. If you’re wondering how to start, where to end, how to cope with other peoples’ points of view and hoping not to hurt anyone’s feelings, you’ll discover tricks of the trade from long-time author, ghostwriter and teacher Amy Friedman. We’ll begin at the beginning--that first spark of an idea--and cover character (and what to do about those characters whose feelings you don’t want to hurt); theme; structure; and dialogue (which, unless you’ve been walking through life carrying a recorder, is by its nature fiction). You’ll leave with a bag of tricks that will serve you on your memoir- and/or personal essay-writing journey.
Patti Smith, when interviewed about her writing, once said:
I would go as far as I could and hit a wall, my own imagined limitations. And then I met a fellow who gave me his secret, and it was pretty simple. When you hit a wall, just kick it in.
In this meeting you’ll learn how to kick in those walls!
Amy Friedman is a Los Angeles-based author, editor, and ghostwriter. After publishing her memoir Desperado’s Wife, the story of her marriage to a man she fell in love with and married while he was in prison, Amy turned her creative energy to founding and building POPS the Club, a nonprofit to provide support for teens who impacted by incarceration. She currently works with The Pathfinder Club that operates the POPS clubs across the country as editor and publisher of Out of the Woods Press where she curates and edits award-winning collections of prose and poetry created by individuals impacted by incarceration. Amy also teaches memoir writing at UCLA Extension and in private workshops in the US, Canada and Europe.
